Creating Your Own Zombie Virus in Blackoak

A massive part of my roleplay game Blackoak is creation, so this post is going to go into a little bit of detail on the recipe and patent systems inside of the world of Blackoak.

Recipes and Crafting

Pretty much every survival game has a crafting system, right? Blackoak is no different. Granted, Blackoak is less about survival and more about sandbox and roleplay, but at the base of the game, survival is still a key part of it. Hunger and thirst are still mechanics that need to be managed, and as a result of which, what you eat and drink will impact these areas respectively.

Every consumable recipe in Blackoak has it’s own unique buffs and debuffs given by it’s ingredients. Some recipes that include more salt will get you thirsty quicker, whilst an energy drink will temporarily slow down your stamina depletion. But this is only the beginning.

Selling, Patents and Distribution

In order to discuss this next section, let’s use an example;

  • We have spent a while making our own energy drink. This drink includes the following ingredients:
    • Water (+Thirst)
    • Apples
    • Sugar (+Energy)
    • Taurine (++Energy)
  • We can now take this product to Blackoak Town Hall to check for a patent. Doing this will check against the server’s database to see if this product has ever been made before and registered.
  • Great News! An apple flavoured sugary energy drink hasn’t been made before! This means we can now give it a name and make it a registered and patented product. Congratulations!
  • You can now offer to sell the product in stores throughout Blackoak. Doing so will require a bit of work beforehand as shopkeepers will ask for an inventory of stock to keep, with the bigger stores requiring a larger stock inventory than smaller ones.
  • Once you have the stock available, you can sell it straight to the store, or cut out the middle man and sell it directly on RegrEtsy.

Essentially, the system is built to offer a method of selling a product in bulk for players looking to push their income to the next level.

So where do Zombies come into this?

Okay, I promise this wasn’t clickbait.

Recipes are a heavy part of the crafting system in Blackoak. They give an extra element to crafting which can allow for dynamic modifiers and ingredient-based effects that primitive crafting doesn’t offer.

At the start of every server, there are some secret recipes that are generated. Some clues can be found, but it’s ultimately down to a player’s determined investigation to find out what can be made.

One of these recipes is… Yep, a zombie virus. More specifically, the Mortis-V virus.

Whilst it’s not specifically included on the item name, the item description may have some reference to Mortis-V. That product, yep you guessed it, will contain the Mortis-V virus.

Selling this item in any capacity will trigger a server-wide event until the next server wipe.

The county of Blackoak will go into a state of emergency. The map will start to slowly fill with the infected who pose a very serious threat to any living being in their path. The Mortis-V virus is no simple one-shot zombie. Infected will sprint at their target and will require a lot of damage before going down.

The city will also see massive effects as the infection spreads. Stores will close or become abandoned, phone networks will shut down only allowing certain apps to run, electricity will indefinitely shut down, and the entire nature of the game will turn on it’s head.

Blackoak will quickly turn from a civilian roleplaying game, into a survival game. People who have made their living from businesses and the ways of the city will have to turn to survival of the fittest.

How often will this happen?

Firstly, I can start off by saying that the Mortis-V recipe is incredible difficult to learn. The recipe is big, takes a lot of resources, will more than likely require a lot of different refining methods or cooking, and will be time-sensitive. To put it bluntly, learning the recipe is only a small part of the battle.

Even though Blackoak has yet to be released to the public, I refuse to provide any actual detail into the recipe or where you can find parts of it. But Blackoak is a world full of secrets, so I’m sure people may come across some stuff sooner or later.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this little dive into one of the darkest secrets Blackoak has to offer. 👀
